Chapter 9

HESPER

The meat melted right off the bone. Sober Hesper would have found it disgusting enough to turn her vegetarian. Half-drunk Hesper moaned like she was having the orgasm of her life.

“This is the best!” she spat with a full mouth. She didn’t know who she was talking to, but yes, it was the best. Something. Food? Barbecue? Pork product? Night with Meadow?

“Put it on my tab.” Hesper was so suave, she should teach a class about how to impress women. How lucky was she that Meadow was there that night and cared that Hesper was drunk! I’m way more interesting when I’m drunk. It’s a fact. Way more open with her thoughts, too. Every drink Hesper took made her screen slide a little farther down its tract, until the window to her soul was wide open and her mouth hung agape like she was catching flies.

The amazing thing? Meadow never brought up what happened Saturday night, when Hesper cancelled on their dinner and drove to Portland to see Kevin in the hospital. I won’t talk about what happened when I got there. After spending most of Sunday in bed, Hesper was determined to get back to production on Monday. She intended to work on Meadow’s tax conundrum. Then she decided to go get drunk, instead.

Life sucked. The weekend sucked. This little moment in time, however? Didn’t suck.

“You’re getting it everywhere!” Meadow grabbed more napkins before Hesper dropped her ribs onto the plate. Her hands were covered in sauce. So was her face, because God help her if she knew how to eat when the slightest bit inebriated. Somewhere, her mother was passing out on the fainting couch because she raised a wolf for a daughter.

“It’s not that big of a mess.” Hesper stuck her finger in her mouth and wrapped her tongue around the barbecue sauce dripping from her nail. She almost fell off her stool from the punch of flavor. Everything tasted better when she had some alcohol in her system.

She looked down at her plate, realizing that she had eaten every chunk of food. All that was left behind were pools of barbecue sauce. Meadow grimaced when Hesper dunked her finger into the sauce and held it up for inspection.

“Look,” she said in a hushed whisper. “It glistens.”

Meadow apparently held her alcohol better than Hesper. One shot of tequila and a big glass of beer later, she still had complete control of her movements and the words coming out of a mouth incapable of slurring. Then again, Hesper was basically drunk. Doesn’t take much. I also pounded a few. She didn’t appreciate the look of concern on Meadow’s face.

“What’s gotten into you, huh?” Ah, there it was. The question Meadow was destined to ask. “I mean, I don’t come here a lot, but I never got the feeling you were the type to get drunk on Monday nights.”

“You are?”

“No…” Meadow sat back with a start. “Like I said. I had a bad day.”

“Well, I’ve had a terrible weekend.
